Olen D. Burdette, husband of Nance McMillion Burdette, proud veteran, dedicated businessman, and family man, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice House. Born on October 23, 1942, in Athens, Ohio, to the late Ralph Waldo Burdette and Elsie Mae Thompson Burdette, Mr. Burdette lived a life marked by service, commitment, and an enduring spirit.
A graduate of high school, Olen answered the call to serve his country during a critical period in history. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1962 in Miami, Florida, and served honorably through the Vietnam War years until his discharge in 1966 at Treasure Island, San Francisco, California. His time in the Navy was a foundational chapter in his life, exemplifying his loyalty and dedication to the nation.
Following his military service, Mr. Burdette channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into the transportation industry. For seven years, he was the owner and operator of Palmetto Transportation, applying his strong work ethic and leadership skills to build and maintain a successful business. This career accomplishment stands as a testament to his determination and ability to overcome challenges. Mr. Burdette was also a member of the American Legion Post 48, Chesnee.
Olen's personal life was equally rich and treasured by those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Nance McMillion Burdette of Chesnee, who stood by his side with unwavering support. They share a son, Joseph D. Burdette of Port Orange, Florida, along with their extended family including son-in-law Terry L. Spring of Toledo, Ohio, and daughter-in-law Wendy Williams of St. Charles, Illinois. Olen's family circle also embraces his brother-in-law Jeffrey D. McMillion of Chesnee, as well as his sisters, Ida Mae and Wilma, both residing in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Olen D. Burdette’s legacy is one of steadfast dedication—to his country, his business endeavors, and most dearly, to his family. His memory will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him, carrying forward the values he lived by throughout his years. He will be remembered with deep respect and fondness.
At his request, there are no formal service. Memorial Contributions may be made to the American Legion, Post 48, in the name of Olen D. Burdette.
