Obituary

Barry Potter

Chesnee, SC.

Kenneth Barry Potter, 79, of Chesnee, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

Barry was born on May 2, 1947 to Charles and Amo Jean Martin Potter. Barry was a graduate of Chesnee High School and Spartanburg Technical College. He attended Spartanburg Junior College and Gardner Webb University. He worked and retired in industrial HVAC. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War; he served in the United States Air Force for 4 years and was an aircraft specialist. He was a lifelong member of Chesnee First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Kathy Harmon Potter; his children, Derrick Potter (Jennifer) and Katie Cox (David); his grandchildren, Luke and Emily Cox, and Andrew Potter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Amo Jean Potter and his brother, Gary Potter.

Barry loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He especially loved his grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Bop”. His family loved him dearly and he will be missed immensely by them all.

He enjoyed the simple things in life. He always said, “you’ve got to let the little things make you happy”. You might have seen him walking at the park, finding bargains at trade day, or shooting basketball in the yard. He enjoyed playing guitar, going to NASCAR races, Duke Basketball Games, and rock and roll music concerts. He loved to swim in the ocean, vacation, and travel to see new places.

Barry loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He knew where he was going and would want you to know where you are going, too. If you haven’t placed your faith in Jesus Christ, he would want you to do that today.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2026 at Chesnee First Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Dr. David Cox and Rev. Dr. Gary J. Grogan officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the elevator fund at Chesnee First Baptist Church, 211 S Kentucky Ave, Chesnee, SC 29323, the building fund at Shady Grove Baptist Church, 1201 Shady Grove Rd, Belton, SC 29627 or to the International Mission Board, www.imb.org
